Reflections on the 2009-2010 Year

The 2009-2010 school year is finished, at least for the students. This has been a very trying year for many in the District. In spite of this being such an unusual year, good things are still going on, at all levels of our schools.

Take a moment to share a successful strategy implemented this year in your school/location. In your post, include what was the previous situation, what initiative/strategy was implemented to alleviate the situation and the known outcomes.

OUR LOWEST 30% READERS NEEDED TO BE MONITORED AND MOTIVATED TO MAINTAIN THE 79% LEARNING GAINS WE HAD THE PREVIOUS YEAR. I INITIATED THE "RISING READERS" LIST WHERE EACH MEMBER OF OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM ADOPTED TEN NAMES. FOLDERS WERE MADE AND A RISING READERS PROGRESS SHEET WAS USED FOR WEEKLY PROGRESS AND MINI-ASSESSMENT DATA. STUDENTS GAVE THEIR SHEETS TO THEIR RISING READER "COACHES" AND INCENTIVES WERE PROVIDED FOR PROGRESS.

Our students did not fully comprehend their FCAT & BAT scores. The Administrators conducted individual student data chats with all 3-5 grade students. We provided them their past scores, a kid friendly conversion chart, and a goal setting form. We had the students calculate their needed points to move up a level and create a strategy that they would use to help them obtain their goal. We provided each student a paper copy of the data chats and their goal. The students kept their forms at their desk as a positive reinforcement. It was surprising to several students who were less than 20 points to move a level!!
